Do you have a long-standing longing to get involved with railways? Would you like to be part of a working railway and absorb the atmosphere of steam more closely? If so read on..........
All of the staff on the Railway are volunteers and the railway was built and maintained by the members of the Society. The reason why we joined the SDLRS was that we wanted the fun of running a railway and thoroughly enjoying ourselves in the process.
We always welcome new members – we need them to sustain the work of the railway. We always have several development projects on the go and so your participation would be a source of great strength to us.
There is something for everyone, with suitable training, acting as a Guard on the train, Signalman, Stationmaster or becoming a driver. There is always a need for people prepared to get involved with track maintenance and other significant works but there are also important roles which people can take on ranging from editorial work to account and record keeping.
What do Members get?
- The opportunity to enjoy practical voluntary work on the railway;
- Training for all roles including driving steam trains;
- Personal accident and public liability insurance;
- Free rides for working members and their families;
- A copy of South Downs Way (our journal) twice yearly and the Newsletter;
- Membership of South Downs Light Railway Society Limited.
What does the Railway get?
- Your subscription helps to keep the trains running;
- Any effort you make in volunteering will be most welcome;
- Your word of mouth endorsement is the most valuable publicity the Railway can have. A new friend.
What does it cost?
There are three categories of membership:
- Family Membership (two adults & two children under 18 years of age) £30 per year
- Individual Adult Membership £20 per year
- Individual Junior Membership £10 per year
Membership is based on the Calendar Year.
How to join
We ask all prospective members to come along to the Railway once or twice to meet us and get involved, and see whether you wish to become a member of the Society.
